La prise en charge des personnes âgées dépendantes en Europe : le vécu des aidants familiaux

Abstract : Care for the dependant elderly has become an important issue of “care deficit” due to the increase in participation of women on the labour market and the geographical mobility of families. This article relates a qualitative comparative study carried out in six European countries. The authors studied the investment of family helpers with professional activities. In all countries studied daughters, sons, daughter in laws and sons in law are the central figures in the arrangements made for help. When they have recourse to other carers at the homes of their elderly parents, these family members are still the ones who coordinate the care. The article also shows how this engagement generates a great deal of stress for those involved.
