Integration of Occupational Exposure into the Exposome

Abstract

The exposome concept was proposed to improve the reliability of exposure data for a better understanding of the etiology of chronic diseases. Designed to tackle three issues, namely the multiplicity, temporality, and variability of environmental exposure, the exposome concept is operationalized through a broad array of methodologies and tools. In this chapter, we first address the internal chemical exposome from the point of view of the intense development of bioanalytical technologies, which are briefly reviewed. Despite major advances in this field, the measurement of internal chemical exposure is still unable to provide an overall view of human exposure. Then, we describe how the eco-exposome complements the internal chemical exposome by considering physical exposure and social determinants. We show how new tools and methods deployed for exposome measurement can be applied in the field of occupational health (worksome). Finally, we present the main challenges to the better operationalization of the worksome concept.
