Abstract : The article examines a symbolic figure of employment for pensioners : the Wal Mart Greeter. Within the context of proximity services, the giant American food retailer’s senior-friendly age policy is distinctly striking. The procedure adopted in the article takes the gamble that the case of the Wal Mart Greeter will successfully lead to the unravelling of a certain number of representations linked to senior citizens’ professional attractiveness. At the same time, the analysis of such a typical figure of ideal senior employment explores the socio-cultural reference structures from which senior citizens may gain recognition in the employment world.
