BackgroundTo tackle global health challenges such as emergent diseases and migrant health we need to equip the public health workforce with cross-cutting competencies such as communication, leadership, critical and systems thinking, and intercultural skills. Six European universities have collaborated to design Europubhealth (EPH). EPH is recognized as a Master of excellence and co-funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus programme since 2006. This 2 year transnational master uses 3 languages of instruction: English, Spanish and French, and demonstrates the added value of multi-disciplinary and transcultural training. Associated partners include leading national and supra-national public health organizations. This guarantees curriculum relevance. Since 2006 EPH has trained some 250 graduates from over 70 different countries.ObjectivesA unique feature of EPH is its joint integration module at the end of each academic year. This offers an intercultural crucible coupled to innovative pedagogy to tackle hard-to-reach-group issues such as migrant health. Problem based learning scenarios designed by visiting professors from outside Europe further facilitate the acquisition of key competencies. Simulations and competitive calls for tender develop key leadership, project management and intercultural competencies.ResultsTraining in intercultural awareness has been developed in partnership with the Mailman School of Public Health (USA). To confirm a significant shift in intercultural attitudes following such input, the Intercultural development Inventory© is being proposed on a voluntary basis to students by a qualified administrator. She will debrief and measure the students’ intercultural competency development in successive integration modules.
